Major 8.8 quake hits Chile; Death toll expected to rise

Saturday, February 27, 2010 SOURCE: GDAC – On 2/27/2010 6:34:17 AM UTC (about 01:43h local time) an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred in the moderately populated region of Bio-Bio in Chile. The earthquake happened 116km from Concepcion. It is reported that a life threatening tsunami has been generated. CMAT is monitoring the situation and is preparing to send an assessment team to the region within the next 12-24 hours.
