Team HOTEL concludes @CMATeams deployment in Ukrai Team HOTEL concludes @CMATeams deployment in Ukraine and Poland with a visit to the Embassy of Canada in Warsaw @canadapolska @CanadaPoland @CanadaPologne to summarize our activities and discuss future plans.
Thank you Martin LaFlamme for meeting with our team!
As @cmateams present deployment in Ukraine comes t As @cmateams present deployment in Ukraine comes to a close, Team HOTEL Team Leader Alex Wong shares his reflections on his experiences in Ukraine the last couple of weeks. Thank you Alex!
“These past couple weeks have gone by so fast for me. I wish I could have done more. I wish I could continue to do more. I get to go home. It is not lost on me that, for many of the people I have met, the idea of home is now a nebulous concept. Many had their childhood homes destroyed and have had to flee the violence. Some are in temporary shelters, some have family or friends in other areas that they are trying to get to and some proudly stand their ground. There is so much uncertainty for what the future holds. I cannot imagine the anguish that they carry.
Thank you, Ukraine. In each of your voices, I see the hope that carries the human spirit; it inspires me to cherish my passion.”
Last week, @cmateams was proud to recognize our pa Last week, @cmateams was proud to recognize our partnership with the state hospital in Kovel, Ukraine - Ковельське МТМО
In response to the war, the hospital was required to decant 40% of their patients back into the community to free up beds for wounded.
In addition to the mobile clinics CMAT provided for Internally Displaced Persons in the communities, local Kovel medical staff have also transitioned to providing home visits for community members.
CMAT has donated the complete set up of a @butterflynetwork Point-of-Care ultrasound system, to better provide for the patients in the community, as well as provide diagnostic imaging in emergencies and traumas.

Thank you to NP Alex Wong - Team Hotel team leader Thank you to NP Alex Wong - Team Hotel team leader and RN Mary Simone who have taken up the torch for our social media updates. Happy Father’s Day, and wishing all the dads out there peace and love today and always.
“It is father's day today as I reflect on the interaction I had with a young girl, whom I cared for this week. She is the same age as my own daughter. Her initial medical condition was simple, but her life could not be more complicated.
As I asked her to stick out her tongue at me, she smiled briefly. That smile is the sign of hope that reminds me of why I am here as a healthcare provider. I want to savour that hope with her as we both attempt to personify the good in the world.
It is nature to hope that our children have a better life than we do. Maybe she can see, a total stranger hopes for everything for her.
I know her father hopes for everything for her as well, as he stands hundreds of kilometres away from this moment… defending his country, with countless other fathers, grandfathers, uncles and brothers.
I am so appreciative of the opportunity to be able to insert myself, however briefly, into the stories of each of the people I come in contact with and show that someone hopes for them. Their stories are so powerful and rich it would be an injustice for me to try to begin to share.”
Lessons from 🇺🇦 Just because it’s always b Lessons from 🇺🇦
Just because it’s always been done one way, doesn’t mean it can’t be improved. Case in point, every day we drank our coffee out of cereal bowls so that we had more coffee to drink. Ukrainians don’t need to learn this lesson- they clearly already knew this. Ukrainians worked to have a government that was independent of Russian influence, and a government that would work for the betterment of Ukraine, despite how things worked in the past.
Sometimes you just need to “Spoko,” or relax. The little things need not be stressed when there are so many more important things for us to spend our worries on.
Ukrainian people are still living their daily lives as best as they can. Their country is being invaded, they are at war, but they don’t sweat the small stuff. We all need to learn from them.
If you’re not seeing what you’re looking for, it’s okay to shift your perspective, you might even see a bigger picture.
We learned this one day as the team was pulled over at the side of the road, trying to snap photos of a beautiful, yet sparse field of poppies hidden behind some trees.
Then, upon turning around we realized that the field behind us was even larger and more beautiful. Again, Ukrainians already knew this. They didn’t like what they saw in their government, so they shifted their perspective, they changed things for the betterment of Ukraine, and how beautiful that change has been.
Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that matter. The most common thing we were thanked for while on the ground in Ukraine had nothing to do with our medical care.
People were just grateful that we were there. Our presence served as a reminder that Ukrainians have not been forgotten. They didn’t need our fancy equipment or extensive medical knowledge, really what they needed was for us to just be there with them, to stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
One day each and every one of us dreams of returning to a peaceful, thriving, free Ukraine. The impact that Ukraine and its people left on our hearts will stay with us forever, I speak for the whole team when I say that I am forever grateful for this opportunity.
SLAVA UKRAINI (glory to Ukraine)
