January 15, 2006: CMAT is pleased to report that it has successfully completed distribution of 1,000 badly needed winterized tents and 5,000 thermal quilts to Pakistan quake survivors. Out of the 400,000 tents that were deployed in the weeks following the October 8, 2006 quake, over 90% were not suitable for winter conditions.

December 12, 2005: CMAT has learned of a new major quake in Afghanistan and Northern Pakistan. Preliminary reports from CMAT field staff are that the quake was centered in a sparsely populated area in the Hindu-Kush Mountains with tremors felt from Rawalpindi and Islamabad, to Lahore. Muzzafferabad, epicenter of the devastating October 8 – 7.6 magnitude quake was largely spared, according to Dr. Omar Elahi, CMAT physician in a cell phone conversation from Abbotabad. Dr. Elahi, a Canadian citizen and resident of Toronto, has been assisting in the area since October 8 and survived the first quake himself after his dormitory collapsed.

CMAT received a $25,000 donation from YM Inc. to help build a school in Pakistan.

Monday, December 5, 2005: CMAT is pleased to announce today that it has been given a $25,000 donation from YM Inc. to build a public school in a location to be determined. Further, a pledge was made to provide support to the school once it is built. This will help jumpstart the rebuilding phase of the CMAT relief project in Pakistan.

hospital_crewDecember 3, 2005: CMAT announced today that it has been asked to staff the mobile hospital the Canadian Forces Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) is leaving behind in Pakistan as they return to Canada. Captain Richard Perreault with the Canadian Forces Joint Headquarters in Kingston said nearly 10,000 patients were treated during their 40-day mission. The hospital was turned over to the Pakistan Red Crescent, and in a meeting with CMAT officials, CMAT was asked to provide staffing for the field hospital, located in Garhi Dupatta, about 45 minutes east of Muzzafferabad.
