CMAT Team 2 sends report and pics from Banda Aceh, Indonesia

January 29, 2005: CMAT’s second team of 5 paramedics from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan have issued a report and pictures from their work in Banda Aceh. The team left for Indonesia on January 18 and will be returning to Canada on February 3.The team worked with CMAT partner, Mercy Malaysia in Banda Aceh. Tools and supplies donated by Home Depot in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada were distributed to local citizens, multi set blood pressure cuffs were given to a field hospital being run by a Malaysian physician so pediatric patients could be treated.
In the village of Lumpu’uk, flashlights, tents, food, and sandals were distributed. At a Tsunami-damaged mosque in Banda Aceh, the CMAT Reconstruction team also gave funds to mosque officials collected from 7 families with the Muslim Association of Hamilton, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada for Kurbani (distribution of meat to feed needy families on the occasion of the Muslim Hajj or Pilgrimage).
Hand drawn cards and letters of support from children at York-Region District School Board schools participating in ‘Project Helping Hands’ spearheaded by Mr. Jeewan Chanicka, where 24 schools came together and collected more than $61,000 USD for CMAT’s Tsunami relief efforts, were distributed to children in villages in Aceh province. The following is an excerpt from Mr. Gerry Schriemer’s field notes:
‘Everything seemed to be covered but there appeared to be no medical at a region called, Lhoknga, which was hard to believe because it was only 30-40 minute drive. Enroute we saw the devastation caused by the earthquake and water. Locals say the water went at least 2 km inland and were as high has 3-5 meters moving at 50klm/hr. When we arrived at Lhoknga it was easy to see why there was no need for medical, there was no Lhoknga.’

In the next phase of CMAT’s relief strategy, CMAT will work with local Indonesians and partners to implement further reconstruction and rehabilitation projects in Sumatra which will continue over the next 6-8 months.
