CMAT to meet emergency needs of 1,210 children in nine orphanages in Tamil Nadu, India
February 17, 2005: Two Canadian CMAT volunteers, James Caddell and Tara Newell, have completed a needs assessment in the Tsunami devastated Kanniyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, India.
As a result, CMAT will be supporting the emergency needs of 1,210 orphans and Tsunami affected children living in nine non-government funded orphanages in this district. These orphanages are accepting children from all castes, religions and cultures, without discrimination.
CMAT will earmark $8,000 USD to support the orphanages and will purchase “Life Kits” for each child living in the orphanages. The kits include 1) a large sleeping mat, 2) hygiene kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, laundry soap, body soap), and 3) an aluminum wash bucket.
Bedding, hygiene supplies, school supplies, medical supplies and basic nutrition have been identified as most urgent needs. In addition, CMAT will be purchasing three milk cows to provide fresh milk, cheese and yoghurt for the children at Sirumalar Home, one of the orphanages most in need in the area.
CMAT is grateful for the support of its donors.
