CMAT volunteer Brandon Duncan, RN learned about the 2010 earthquake in Haiti on the news, and began to research on how he could help.  His solution came to him through an old high school classmate, who was also volunteer with CMAT.  Through Facebook, Brandon kept reading updates the volunteer’s brother was posting online.  Brandon was immediately drawn to CMAT, applied, and was selected to go to Haiti in April 2010. Brandon has been involved in a variety of local CMAT activities since then, and deployed to the Philippines in November 2013.  Brandon also  travelled to the Gaza Strip in November 2012 with another organization, to assist in teaching ACLS to local emergency responders.

CMAT volunteer Aric Rankin has always understood the importance of lending a helping hand, especially in times of need.

When the earthquake struck Haiti in January 2010,  Aric spent several weeks in Léogâne as part of the first CMAT medical team, providing medical care to earthquake survivors in the CMAT field clinic.

Wednesday January 12, 2011 – On January 12, 2010, the ground under Port Au Prince, Haiti and its environs shook.

In 40 seconds, nearly 300,000 people died, and 1.5 million were rendered homeless.

Courtesy cross-posting: UNICEF Seeks Health Professionals for Haiti Cholera Response

Thursday December 23, 2010 – The cholera epidemic continues to affect the people of Haiti, and this is a true emergency situation. CMAT has been asked by our colleagues at UNICEF for assistance in their response.

The emergency responders on ground in Haiti need immediate help, and UNICEF staffers are searching for FRENCH or CREOLE-speaking health providers: nurses, paramedics, and other trained health professionals to assist in their response. This language requirement is mandatory, and UNICEF hopes to have some people on the ground as early as next week, if possible.

Please DO NOT contact CMAT, instead please CONTACT UNICEF DIRECTLY stating your interest and availability, and attaching an up to date CV. This information will be conveyed to the UNICEF Haiti Country Office for their review.

July 12, 2010 – Today marks 6 months since the devestating earthquake struck Haiti, killing over 200,000 people and rendering well over 1,000,000 homeless. CMAT Executive Director Valerie Rzepka reflects on the organization’s response to this crisis.

The early days
Arriving less than 72 hours after the disaster, I was part of the CMAT Assessment team which quickly set about surveying the areas in and around Port-au-Prince. While I established contact with the UN On-site Operations Coordination Centre (UN-OSOCC), UN Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA), and WHO- Pan-American Health Organization (WHO-PAHO, my colleagues on the assessment team went about scouting the region and environs for a suitable location for our field hospital, where there was the greatest need.
